Rainbow Lorikeet parrot is the most beautiful and precious bird. It is a medium-sized brightly colored parrot. Lorikeet is a human-friendly parrot they need more love and attention than other pet birds.

Lorry bird encourages boots to play whenever their favourite person is around. This is a firm bird, that is usually long-lasting in captivity.

Appearance

A Rainbow Lorikeet is a very beautiful bird whose size is just over a foot-long from head to tail feathers and its weight is about 105-130gm.

The rainbow lorikeet is illusive with its orange beak and vivid feathers. Males and Females all look similar to a blue (mauve) head, greenback, wings and tail, and an orange/yellow chest.

Juvenile rainbow lorikeet has a null color feather and black beak instead of bright red/orange which color changes when they grow older.

Gender Identification

There is no visible identification in the rainbow lorry as both sexes look alike, the only way to sex this bird is DNA.

Habitat and Native Region

They live in the trees of woodland, rainforests, and coastal areas as well as in well-treed urban areas.

Lorikeet the bird is native to seaside regions of northern and eastern Australia. They recently become established in Western Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, and Indonesia.

Talking 

Rainbow Lorikeet parakeets, like other lorikeet parakeets, may be rather noisy. Their voice is a high-pitched tone with a constant bark.

A rainbow lorikeet talking is very wonderful they can learn many words and phrases. Their speech is clear but they are not the best talkers in the family.

Diet

In the wild, they feed on honey and pollen from plants and flowers. If you look inside a lorikeet’s mouth, you’ll notice that their tongue is uniquely accustomed to “brushes” on the end to help them pluck this food from the plants.  

Provide fresh fruits, green vegetables daily. Always wash fruits and vegetables before giving them. Citrus fruits are toxic for parrots because they may cause digestive problems. They need wet or dry nectar food.

These birds also eat flowers, commercially or homemade nectar (from juice). A nutritional diet is very important for the proper growth of birds. Cuttlefish bone is the best Calcium supplement for all birds. You may also need to use Moringa leaf Powder for birds.

On the need, you can also give calcium and vitamin supplements for their good health. Provide fresh and clean water daily.

Food to avoid the birds are Dairy Products, chocolate, avocado, onion, potato, alcohol, and coffee, they are toxic to all birds.

Rainbow lorikeet Breeding

Wild birds breed in the hollow limb of a tall tree. Both the male and female work together to create the nest.

In Captivity, Rainbow lorikeet parrots start breeds from November to April. They can breed twice in a season. They lay one to three eggs in a clutch. Female incubates the eggs for around 25 days.

 A vertical nest box should be provided for 10 x 10 x 18 is recommended. The diameter of the entrance hole must be 2.5inches. Must be placed wood shaving in the breeding box. Sexual capability is achieved at 2 years old.

Cage Requirements

These parrots are very active having a beautiful tail. They need many exercises to take care of their physical health. A lorikeet pet bird needs a large flight cage so they can climb and fly. The minimum cage size should be 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet tall.

The cage should be hardy metal construction. The bar spacing of the cage should be half an inch. And the perch size 1-inch (square) or 3cm in diameter recommended. Be careful, don’t place the water bowls under perches. Must clean or wash the water and food bowls deeply in a week.

Life Span 

A pet rainbow lorikeet has a lifespan of 10 to 20 years. If you have a bird, keep his environment clean. Provide a nutritional diet to keep him healthy. They may live up to 30 years.

Health Problems 

  1. These birds are susceptible to lorikeet paralysis syndrome, in this condition birds are unable to move their body, legs, wings, or head. They may also lose their ability to swallow or blink.
  2. Sour crop, a bacterial infection that affects the crop of bird or food storage pouch in the throat. You can avoid this problem with precise cleaning of the bird’s cage, food, and water feeders, or bowls between feeding.
  3. When the bird becomes bored, ignored, or gets anxious than they prone to feather plucking. So, must provide them a good environment, toys, and physical exercise.
