The most important element of a lovebird’s food is nutrition. It is specially not for lovebirds as well as for all pet birds. A nutritional diet is the main factor of all pet bird’s health.
In captivity, we neglect many things that have the cause birds problems such as feather losing, breeding issues, or even life-scaring diseases. There is no perfect ratio of lovebirds diet, it is up to you, however, there’s should be 20-30% fruits, green veggies, sprouts seeds, and nuts.
Never switch the bird’s food rapidly. Always shift the bird food by adding new and decreasing the old food.
Seeds based diet:
Including lovebirds, all birds eat a seed-based diet. lovebird eat a collection of seeds mix. In captivity, you need to give seeds based diet in a normal quantity.
Although seeds are rich in fat, I will recommend you to give them in a small quantity. This diet remains fresh and is available everywhere.
The diet which I gave to my lovebirds contains:
- Pearl millet, Foxtail millet, Panicum red millet, white proso millet (75% of seeds based diet)
- Paddy rice, canary seed, safflower seed, sunflower seed ( 25% of diet)
The ratio is not perfect. If you want to give this seeds-based diet, consult your veterinarian.
Pellets are formulated birds diet which is made especially for the need of each parrot. Pellets are made to provide a completely balanced nutritional diet for pet birds.
They contain a mixture of different foods such as seeds, vegetables, fruits, and grains and also have the correct ratio of nutrients that your lovebirds need. Through, this the pet bird will eat equal nutrients in each bite. Always use good company pelleted food which has quality ingredients.
Soaked food is a great nutritional feed for parrots. This soft food can be given to all pet birds. Soaked food is a great source of Protein, Vitamins, Calcium, Iron, and much more facts. Give 2 tablespoons twice a week for each pair. It includes:
- White and Black chickpeas
- Green gram
Soak them all 10 to 15 hrs. Just before giving it to birds wash them with apple cider vinegar water and drain them to a colander.
Fruits and Vegetables:
Fruits and vegetables are one of healthy food for all birds. You can give this on daily basis. This food will keep your bird strong and active.
The favorite fruits of birds are Apples, Mangoes, Berries, Grapes, Kiwis, Guava, Pineapple, Bananas, and Oranges. Always remove poisonous seeds of apples before giving them to birds. Don’t give avocado, it noted as toxic for birds. Most of these fruits have Vitamin C that boosts the immune system.
Vegetables also have a great taste for birds. Different vegetables should be given to birds. The safe and favorite veggies for lovebirds are Broccoli, Cabbage, Tomatoes, Reddish, Peas, Carrots, Spinach, Fenugreek, Cucumber, Pepper, and Beetroot. These are all healthy diets.
Always give fresh fruits and vegetables and before serving wash them thoroughly. Give in a separate dish and don’t leave for a long time. Always, give in a normal quantity and parrots can eat in 3-4 hours.
Sprouts seeds food:
Sprouts are also beneficial for love-birds health. Sprouts are seeds that have germinated. Moong Beans, chickpeas, lentils, alfalfa beans, and sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, and sesame seeds can be given in sprouts.
